Collective Leadership

Collective leadership is the practice of people working together toward a shared purpose. It builds shared responsibility and joint decision-making. People take on clear roles, but power and agency are shared. The group creates the conditions for each person to contribute fully. It also seeks views from across the system, especially from those most affected. Collective leadership is intentional. It asks people to reflect on their role in the system and to stay open to learning and change.

Why this matters to the ChangeFest Movement No single person or group can shift a system alone. Collective leadership is critical for helping communities act unity and strength. It builds trust across sectors and communities. It helps people work with power, not ignore it. By sharing purpose and influence, members can authorise each other’s work. This builds credibility and impact. It also helps the communities stay adaptive in complex and changing contexts.

How this can be actionable Communities or groups can co-create a clear shared purpose and define roles. They can invite voices from across the system into planning and review. They can name and discuss power openly. They can build space to reflect on tensions, old patterns, and new needs. They can practice perspective shifting and adapt their behaviour. Regular check-ins on “how we are working” can strengthen trust and collaboration.
